Alnwick

Go full steam for the pretty village of Wylam with its fine railway heritage. It’s the birthplace of one of Britain’s railway pioneers, George Stephenson.  Dubbed the ‘Father of the Railway’ George Stephenson invented the ‘Rocket’, the famous railway locomotive.  He was born in a cottage close to the centre of the village. Owned by the National Trust, it is open for visitors to explore.

Wylam’s railway pedigree continues with Stephenson contemporary and locomotive engineer Timothy Hackworth, who was also born in the village.

Arrive or depart from Wylam by train and visit one of the world’s oldest ticket offices. The very first railway tickets as we know them today were used on the Wylam line linking Newcastle to Carlisle.
